A Celebration of Beat Poetry and Music
Shane Hollands is an Auckland based performance poet who fronts the jazzbeat poetry-rock band Freaky Meat. Freaky Meat ‘Brings back a sexy form of Beat Poetry at home on the stained streets of Auckland’ (No Mag) Shane founded The Literatti and was Creative Director for the collective’s initial year. Shane's directorship focused on developing the poets' ability to work with live and recorded music...and without any paper. He is also the creator of The Kerouac Effect- NZ’s annual celebration of Beat Poetry. Shane ran the spoken word/music show The Dirty Wordz Radio Show on Fleet FM, instigating the ‘Dirty Wordz Live Sessions’ pairing performance poets with live musicians in an improv setting. Shane has been an innovator in the spoken word/performance poetry scene in New Zealand for decades & is instrumental in New Zealand’s poetry-music crossover renaissance. Shane has performed throughout New Zealand and his work has been published in Live Lines, Side Stream, & Tongue In Your Ear.
Vince Cabrera has been playing bass since the 1980s and comes from a post-punk/industrial music background, with a strong interest in folk and acoustic music. These days, he sees himself as mostly a solo bassist. You can hear more of his music on his soundcloud page.
